At Christmas Eve mass at St. X yesterday, Father Howe talked about how part of the story of Christmas included very specific naming instructions. And he advised that in our own lives, we should be mindful of the names and the labels we use with other people. If you reinforce something negative with the names you call someone, it can be become self-fulfilling. On the other hand, if you are kind, gentle, and encouraging with the names you use, that same person might stand a little taller, seek to be a little better, and to live up to your positive expectation and belief in them.
