At MOE’s Pioneer Tribute dinner, I met Mrs Mangalesvary Ambiavagar who is 100 this year. She told me that apart from running the school and teaching English classes, as a principal she also worked with the canteen cooks to ensure that the children had meat and vegetables in their dishes! Nutrition was a key issue then. The cooks didnt mind, because they knew she had the childrens welfare at heart. Children came to school knowing only Chinese so she had difficulty explaining certain terms to them. Shed rope in the help of the cleaner walking by with his broom, point to a picture and ask him to tell the students what it was in Chinese. Thats how everyone in the school, including cooks and cleaners, had a part to play in educating our students ! Mrs Ambiavagar told me something beautiful, that can be true for all of us no matter what we do… What I did was common, but I put meaning to it.
