At approximately 2:15 pm Wednesday, September 17 a tractor trailer - TopicsExpress

At approximately 2:15 pm Wednesday, September 17 a tractor trailer truck trying to do a three point turn around on a 2 lane road became unable to move from its perpendicular position on the Norfolk Southern Rail Road Tracks. A school bus and other traffic on Cureton Ferry Road had to turn around to avoid the truck stuck on the tracks. The accident was located between Hall Spencer and Reservation Roads. Private residents on Cureton Ferry Road are too familiar with tractor trailer trucks attempting to re-direct their large vehicles on the narrow, curvy, hilly rural road. Last Fall the situation was addressed at a York County Council meeting and resulted in signs being posted prohibiting tractor trailer trucks from using Cureton Ferry and Hall Spencer Roads to reach Highway 5. In this event the driver was headed to Resolute Forest Products (formerly Bowater), and was not in violation of the no-thru truck traffic prohibition. The driver of the tractor trailer truck was using a GPS but decided to turn around because he was concerned about how narrow the road was and he thought he was approaching a town. Representatives from the York County Sheriff, South Carolina Highway Patrol and Norfolk Southern Rail Road arrived at the scene which took over two hours to resolve. Resolute was contacted so that they could be aware of the problem drivers have trying to find their facility. It was suggested that signs be placed at the intersection of Cureton Ferry and Reservation Roads and also on Highway 21 to indicate where to turn for Resolute.
