At least one eastbound lane of Highway 54 in Osage Beach was closed Sunday morning as crews investigated an accident involving a vehicle entering the Lake of the Ozarks. According to the Osage Beach Police Department, at approximately 4:45 a.m., a passenger vehicle driven by a 23-year-old Springfield man was traveling eastbound near the Grand Glaize Bridge when it hit the guardrail, jumped the guardrail, traveled down an embankment and plunged into the Lake of the Ozarks. A responding officer entered the lake to locate passenger(s) in the vehicle. The driver was located on the bank of the lake where he was assisted by another officer, where he was transported to a local marina before an ambulance took him to Lake Regional Hospital. A helicopter then transported the driver from Lake Regional to University Hospital in Columbia. The officer entering the water was reportedly unable to locate any passengers in the vehicle. As of Sunday morning, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Missouri Department of Transportation accident reconstruction team was on the scene to determine more details about the wreck.
