At least two people have died in clashes between opponents and supporters of Egypt’s President Mohamed Mursi outside the Muslim Brotherhood’s headquarters in Cairo. Gunfire rang out and fires blazed as violent protesters attacked the building with shotguns, petrol bombs and rocks. Hospital sources said at least 11 people had been injured. Witnesses told euronews that guards within the building fired on the demonstrators to push them back – but reported no intervention from police and fire services. Mursi is a leading member of the Brotherhood, one of the Arab world’s most prominent Islamic movements. His critics accuse him of trying to turn Egypt into an authoritarian, religious state. A groundswell of protest against the President has exploded into mass demonstrations in cities across Egypt. The rallies drew a crowd of some half a million people in Cairo, and a similar number in Alexandria – the largest anti-government rallies since the uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
