At the meeting of the Directors General for Higher Education of the EU Member states discussing performance oriented funding policies, where the European Commission presented two recently published studies on Cost Sharing and Students Fees and Support Systems representing the European Students Union and bringing the voice of the students to the debate. We are quite surprised that the EU Commission presents those studies, interpreting their results in such a way that seems to invite EU Member States to introduce (or increase) students tuition fees. Even more surprised to see such a political push for one side of the coin when this topic is heavily affected by the subsidiarity principle and the Commission has not a direct competence, nor the Council of the European Union or the European Parliament give any mandate of advocating for introducing higher fees for students. Not to say that we have some serious concerns not only with their interpretation of the data, but also with the analysis and examples used.
