At the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere the sun appears directly overhead along the Tropic of Cancer at noon. During the vernal and autumnal equinox it appears directly overhead at the equator. At the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere it appears directly overhead along the Tropic of Capricorn. The apparent motion is 22.5 degrees north and 22.5 degrees south or 45 degrees overall and that zone is the tropics.
