At todays plenary session i moved a motion on the NEED FOR PRO- ACTIVE MEASURE BY THE NIGERIAN CUSTOMS SERVICE IN CHECKING ACTIVITIES OF ECONOMIC SABOTEURS. The house note: that the transformation policy of the Federal Government includes, optimization of the production level of local industries, through prohibition of importation of certain categories of products that challenge the survival of local industries that produce similar products. Further notes that this policy is meant to strengthen our economy in line with global economic practice. And in enforcing this regulation, the Nigeria Customs Service has major role to play. Aware, that the Nigerian Government had rejected an offer from Malaysia to allow them Export palm-oil from their country to Nigeria. Disturbed that Nigerian borders has become so porous to the extent that smuggling of palm oil and other consumables into Nigeria through our neighboring countries has become the order of the day to the extent that it is having negative effect on the marketability of locally produced oil and other consumables. Further disturbed that the rate at which rice and other food items are also being smuggled to our countries through various borders to their predetermined destinations is so high that one will be surprised at how much revenue has eluded Nigeria through activities of smugglers, as result of compromise by the Nigerian Custom officers. The question is, since the Agricultural policy of the transformation agenda of Government has prohibited such activity and it is believed that the Nigerian Customs Service is aware. How did those goods cross our borders, before moving within the country? Resolve to mandate the house committee on customs to engage the Nigeria Customs Service, with a view to know what the agency is doing in order to curb the activities of those smugglers and report to the house within 4 weeks.
