At what used to be Kings River in California’s Central Valley, a town is sinking. After four years of drought, farmers have pumped so much water from underground that the water table below the town of Stratford fell 100 feet in the past 24 months. Land in some spots in the valley has sunk a foot a year, notes the LA Times in an article accompanied by stark black-and-white images of the area by photographer Michael Robinson Chavez. The great agricultural region is seen here as a parched place where dust devils rise menacingly into the sky.
