Attempts to reform this system are ongoing, and true change in the system will take a long time. The police have evolved over the years from civic defenders to paramilitary, and fixing them will require a complete change of mentality we, as a society, have in how to treat criminals. They are a reflection of us, after all, part of us. Because society decided on “getting tough on crime” as if it were some external force you could stop rather than an internal issue of society itself, the United States now has more prisoners than any other nation in history. Reforming the police is a step in the right direction, but it must be met with a reform in society itself. Otherwise any changes will be fleeting, and temporary.
