Attention all Loyolite Friends. Please read the letter by Kanagaraj Easwaran of Mizoram University. We all were cheated by the So called Media perverts rating colleges...... Dear Professional Social Worker, Greetings from Mizoram. I would like to share some of my views. I have gone through the previous rating of schools of social work. I made the following comment in the web page of outlook magazine. 1/D-77 FEB 04, 2011 11:30 AM Firstly, the people who have conducted the survey do not know what social work is? The institutions ranked 4th , 6th, and 10th are not offering any course on social work at all. Course on human resource management, rural management and sociology are not social work. Social work is a distinct profession. Second thing is that the methodology followed is not scientific. Third important thing is that the institution ranked 13th does not exist in Chennai. The one that exists in Annamalai Nagar is a Sociology Department. It offers social work for a few years. I know the institute and the people there. It is astonishing to know such institution is better than Loyola college of social sciences which is well known in the south. DR. KANAGARAJ EASWARAN AIZAWL, INDIA The outlook magazine has responded positively by removing the institutions which are offering courses other than social work. But the methodology followed is still far from satisfaction because of the following reasons. 1. The subjective indicators are given equal weightage along with objective components. The background of experts (Who are these experts where did they study social work) matters much in their rating. How come they suppose that these experts know all the institutions spread all over the country and rate them on the basis of the quality of education. Do they have supernatural powers to know all social work institutions in India? 2. Further the objective indicators not clearly defined. In their measurement also a lot of subjectivity is involved. Further, there is the criteria includes no component of research among the components. Research is crucial for promotion of social welfare and the mission of social work. 3. We do not know how many schools of social work have actually participated in this exercise and were rated. It seems to me that this rating reflects the urban elite rating of schools of social work in capital cities of India. It may be part of marketing strategy of some groups. My humble request to all social work professionals is to simply ignore this rating. That will help us to grow. Kanagaraj Easwaran Mizoram University
