Attorney General Patrick Morrisey today applauded the U.S. Supreme Court for upholding governmental bodies right to pray before a meeting and issued the following statement: “Our Office is pleased the U.S. Supreme Court today ruled that legislative bodies may engage in a moment of prayer prior to a meeting. In August, West Virginia joined 22 other states in an amicus, or friend of the court, brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn an appellate court’s ruling that declared the Town of Greece, N.Y., violated the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause by beginning government sessions with a prayer. “This is an issue that is critically important to West Virginia, its citizens and local governments. West Virginia has a proud tradition of beginning public meetings with a time for prayer, and I am pleased this practice will be able to continue. The free expression of faith should not be quashed. “West Virginia is not alone in this practice, either. Forty-nine states open their legislative sessions with prayer, as do both chambers of Congress. Praying before meetings is a tradition that dates back to the founding of our Republic, and it is refreshing to know that the Supreme Court, albeit very divided, supports that right.”
