Audra Simpson is a leading Indigenous scholar / critical theoretical ethnographer with a sense of humor. Working within the community she exists, Kahnawà:ke, her book titled “Mohawk Interruptus” offers three solid contributions: Sovereignty can exists with sovereignty in a nested way and while one authority attempts to take over, it is unable to do this in a complete and final way; There is a political alternative to state recognized identity that stands in tension and stark contrast to nation states that is about the Indigenous desire to be recognized for who we are; It begins to fill in the gaping holes created by political scientists and anthropologists whose past work was neither a critical or robust analysis of Indigenous life. Navigating the paradox of recognition, Simpson argues that Mohawk identity is both a relational and a feeling existence that is not easily operationalized genealogically speaking or quantified by blood.
