August 16, 1938: Robert Johnson dies under mysterious circumstances near Greenwood, Mississippi and is buried in an unmarked grave. Some think that Johnson was poisoned by the jealous husband of a woman with whom he had been flirting. Others think that he died from syphilis. Robert Johnson was 27 years old. While he was relatively unknown and unheralded in his lifetime, the recordings he made in 1936–1937 have influenced generations of musicians including Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Johnny Winter, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton.
