August 3rd, 2009: four years ago I arrived in Raleigh, North Carolina after more than six years away from my home state after dropping out of college. My only reason for returning was the hope of social connections (and jobs) I lacked anywhere else. Though this half-a-decade or so proved a consistently extreme and unrewarding test of my aims, abilities, and powers--a test most people I know, old and young, could conveniently opt out of any time they wished--there can never be a replacement for friends to help bolster you through the most despairingly difficult times. During this time I met at least three friends who will doubtless remain a part of me for life: Tim Daniel, Erik DeNeve, and Eric Beall, without whom I could never have discovered the lies that permeate this "real world"--or overcome the Biggest and Most Despicable Lie ever foisted on a distraught young man: "growing up."
