Australia Day 8 Rowan has to work & Ned is in child care , so Gail is free to take us on a tourist drive around the local area including Redcliffe, the Bee Gees first home when they emigrated to Oz from England. There is an alley way dedicated to them with walls lined with photos from their careers together with a statue of their earliest incarnation. Bob and I are rather disparaging about it but it doesnt stop us having our pictures taken. Then its lunch at a local Mall. Then its off to the airport to collect a hire car for the road trip. We are taking 3 days to drive the 600 miles to Sydney. Rowan has plotted our route and the first afternoon is a short drive to Byron Bay about 2.5 hrs south of Brisbane. It is a very pretty seaside resort with many traditional buildings and very popular with back packers. They are everywhere. Outside the tourist office there are about 40 all sitting on their luggage waiting for the bus to Brisbane. An hour later when we walk by again after dinner there is a fresh ( whats the collective noun for backpackers? pile? snot? - no thats snowboarders - bundle? baggage? pain-in-the-a**e?) waiting sprawled all over the pavement. Opposite they wait in line in their dozens to be frisked by security before being admitted to admitted to the Cheeky Monkey Bar and club - at 7oclock in the evening! Bob and I dine in the Servicemans social club. (Rather like our British Legion but with a good value restaurant). Then back to our guest house, the Upper Byron Palms. It is an old bungalow style house tastefully updated to modern standards. We share a bottle of Sauvignon on the veranda then bed.
