Author Alan Taylor won the Pulitzer for his book “The Internal Enemy: Slavery and the War in Virginia, 1772-1832”. Taylor is a friend of the Star-Spangled Banner Trail, speaking at one of the Trails interpretative workshops last year. The book tells the story of about 3,000 enslaved Africans from the Chesapeake region who escaped slavery by fleeing to the British during the War of 1812. Taylor wrote an essay in the National Park Services War of 1812 handbook and a section of it is on the National Park Service War of 1812 Bicentennial website: nps.gov/stories/high-stakes-of-political-partisanship.htm
