Avatar Kate Brassington Nick R • 10 hours ago Im not condoning violence (the criminal kind or your state-sanctioned kind) here, but do you see the similarities between your reasoning in this comment and the thinking/feelings behind gang violence? You say leaders of prison gangs are the very worst of the worst, which indicates a very narrow and skewed perspective on this stuff. Gangs, while nothing to smile about, are complex social systems that serve very normal, human functions, albeit in unhealthy ways. These people werent born evil; they were conditioned that way. (Conditioning which, by the way, is sustained quite effectively by the prison system.) And the crimes they commit feel entirely justified in the context in which theyre operating. Just like, to you, the idea of letting criminals rot or of electrocuting them sounds justified. But someone has to make some grown-up decisions here, and those decisions need to be based on real, rational analysis of the issues at hand. You all can have your vengeful violent fantasies if that feels good to you. But if thats what we base our justice system on, then were just like THEM. 63 • Share › Avatar Dead Dragonfly Kate Brassington • an hour ago What you said sound really sophisticated and deep. But enlighten me please, whats YOUR solution for violent gang members that are still operating and committing brutal crimes behind prison bars? 1 • Share ›
