Avian Medical Case of the Day: Dont panic! Sometimes a lump on a bird may be a tumor, or it may be a cyst, an ingrown feather, a hernia, or in this case, a collapsed egg that stuck to the doves belly after it broke. We have even had calls to check lumps that turned out to be the crop, the elbow, or just the vertebrae bones in the neck. Before you freak out, check your other birds, if you have any, to see if they have the same structure. Check both sides of your bird to see if a similar bump is present on the other wing or leg. Look at it under good light to see if it is bloody, which means it definitely needs to be seen right away. Lumps and bumps can hide under the feathers for a long time before you notice them, so whenever possible feel your bird all over to get familiar with his anatomy, and ask your veterinarian to show you important things like how to feel his weight and check his abdomen and other parts.
