Aw, hell with it. Im going to weigh in on one aspect of the Star Wars Episode VII casting announcement. The fact that the released photo of the scripts table read features only two actresses among 11 performers has led to a broad assumption that only one new female character will be featured in the film. Ive been asked, so heres my take on it. To date, each Star Wars film has featured more than 11 characters. Im guessing that few films gather each performer of a character with a speaking role for the first table read. When it comes to memorable characters in Star Wars, a good number of them have, when you get right down to it, small roles with little or no dialogue (Im looking at you, Boba Fett). Im guessing that additional cast announcements are forthcoming. So ... while the points raised are valid, the concerns may be premature. Im not suggesting anyone doth protest too much, but I will say its likely too soon. If nothing else, I have all the confidence in the world in Episode VII producer Kathleen Kennedy as a committed advocate for strong female characters in that film and others to follow.
