Awareness is solidarity. Letty’s Rant: If you haven’t seen this film, do yourself a favor and get your Mexican eye candy dose while Mr. Gael Garcia does his thing AND while getting one TINY sneak peek into the life threatening journey HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of immigrants from Central America navigate each year in search of the “American Dream.” Your reasons to watch it: Because we CURRENTLY have a humanitarian crisis in this country with more than ** 70, 000 unaccompanied minors (the biggest in history) the majority from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador- crammed into immigration detention camps strategically located in the Middle of No Where, USA, where they are treated like shit and where 1 out of 10 of those children will be represented by a attorney in immigration court and the rest will be deported to the same conditions they are fleeing. Because the billions of tax payer dollars pumped into our already militarized southern border represents the extreme policies, guidelines, rules, laws, expenses, hoops and loops presented on an immigration application process. (Don’t even get me started on the immigration application process for asylum cases, victims of Domestic Violence, gender violence, and human trafficking.) So NO, applying for a visa is NOT easy. It is NOT fast. It is NOT cheap. Because the LACK of anything in Mexico’s southern border is emblematic of Mexico’s immigration policies- no just or quick legal process, an obvious lack of resources for legal advice and representation. No national interest on behalf of Mexico. Like always, we’re too busy shifting responsibility, pointing fingers- complaining about the U.S immigration policies. HA. Because when we talk about “bi-national relations” between Mexico and the US, there is no discussion on binational efforts to alleviate the economic and political humanitarian crisis forcing people to migrate from Central America. Because sadly the 43 students disappeared about a month ago in Mexico join the history of other massacres all with the same narrative: Invisible bodies of color easily disposed: Tlatelolco, Acteal, the feminicides in Ciudad Juarez, and mass murders of Central American immigrants in Mexico- to mention a few. *AND most importantly… because the mainstream media, won’t tell you at all the role the United States has played and continues to play in all these crises and massacres in Central America and Mexico. #Amerikkka Ignorance is bliss.
