Awo Remains Nigeria’s Greatest Leader -Ex-lawmaker. Former member of the House of Representatives in the Second Republic, Chief Olumuyiwa Akinboro, has described the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as the greatest leader the country ever produced. Akinboro, a legal practitioner, stated this while speaking with selected journalists in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, on Wednesday, According to him, the former Premier of the Western Region, succeeded in maximally utilising the meagre resources at his disposal to advance education, agriculture and other sectors in the country. The octogenarian applauded Chief Awolowo for blocking all avenues to corruption and urged the Federal Government to tackle the problem of corruption, which is threatening the nation’s survival. He further reiterated that Chief Awolowo remained the only Nigerian leader who selflessly worked for the best interest of all Nigerians. “Chief Awolowo successfully blocked all loopholes of unlawful diversion of the people’s resources to private pockets because he was disciplined and was also able to discipline his subordinates. “How can anybody steal money from what Papa did then. We have never seen anything like that again, not even at the federal level. “Nobody has ever been able to beat his enviable record. Any administration that endeavours to follow his footsteps will always be acceptable to the people and become the best political bride among the compatriots,” he said. Apparently taking a swipe at the northern region of the country, Akinboro maintained that the agitation of some Nigerian leaders, who are bent on having the presidency zoned to their region is inspired and motivated by corruption. A founding father of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Akinboro advocated for the creation of a commission that would check the causes and consequences of corruption and make relevant recommendations on how it can be tamed. He also suggested the formation of a mass movement against corruption in Nigeria to comprise groups such as the Odua People’s Congress (OPC), Egbesu group, Niger-Delta militants, students, market men and women, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other professional bodies. He expressed the fear that if the present situation in the country was not checked, the country might drift into anarchy. His words, “corruption is the cradle and genesis of all our seemingly insurmountable and intractable social, moral and economic tribulations, abject poverty, bad roads, decayed infastructure, declining education standards, Boko Haram and all other maladies manifesting steadily in our nation. “Unless there is a better management and a more equitable distribution of our national resources , there will be neither peace nor appreciable progress in Nigeria.” Tribune.
