Azadliq newspaper, one of the few remaining critical newspapers in Azerbaijan, needs your help. Its bank account has been frozen by a court order, seriously jeopardising the continued operations of the paper. Azadliq needs to raise 32,000 AZN immediately to unfreeze its bank account and ensure its very survival. Azadliq has been on the brink of closure for some time, due both to steep fines from excessive defamation lawsuits (many filed by public officials and their supporters) and the inability of the Qasid distribution company to pay its large debt to the newspaper. This court order stems from Azadliqs inability to pay a large fine owed to Bina shopping centre owner Kabira Mammadova for a defamation suit. Azadliq has been under immense pressure from the authorities for many years. In addition to economic hardship, Azadliqs editors and reporters have frequently been subjected to violent attacks and imprisonment for political reasons.
