Vacation! Ahh! What a wonderful concept! This is the moment in time I have been awaiting! The previous 3 weeks have been spent in a whirlwind of feverish activity; making sure patients were seen, physical therapy, medical tests were scheduled, e-mails and letters were sent and reports written summarizing all file activities for each patient; just so that one week could be freed from the tasks of my employment. One day began at 4 AM, traveling to Columbus, GA to attend an appointment; then driving to Mobile for another patient visit ; followed by hours of necessary computer work to document all that was done. But the extra work and long hours are worth it. This evening I was ecstatic as I realized I would be able to share supper time with my husband and my two youngest grands. The boys even helped Grammy prepare Pepper Steak and rice for supper. Each little fellow stood guard at my elbows, tasting Bell Pepper strips and slices of onion as we created a memory and concocted a family meal. It amazes me how the passage of time from 4:59 PM to 5:00 PM can equate to what feels like the weight of the world being lifted from my shoulders. I feel free! I feel gleeful! In all my years of motherhood I have always worked outside the home. I so envied those women blessed with the opportunity to devote themselves solely to home and family. It broke my heart that my time and attention was split between the loves of my life and a profession that sustained them. Yet I always realized how blessed I was to be able to provide a needed income, and how much I did love my patients and being able to aid them in some way. But when vacation time came I was afforded an opportunity to devote myself totally to nurturing and caring for my husband, children and home. The reward for hard work. So, as tomorrow dawns I will begin the joyful task of resurrecting time honored Christmas decorations, hanging wreaths, garland and twinkle lights at windows and doors. I will lovingly set out the Creche I created over 30 years ago to help teach my children why we celebrate Christmas. This same lesson will be shared with little grands. I will have the time to be with them, love them and explain to them that God has blessed us with His Son - and for this I am thankful.
