Trooper Ross Riley was training at Letchworth State Park when he fell into a gorge, according to WIVB-TV. The trooper was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officials have not released information on what caused him to fall. According to The Buffalo News, Riley was a member of the Special Operations Response Team. The 17-year veteran of the force was a member of the six-person team that helped locate a missing hunter in Zoar Valley Gorge in 2010. He was also known for doing rappelling demonstrations. In 2008, he was lauded in 2008 for reviving a man who suffered a heart attack at the Erie County Fair. His wife, Heidi Riley, is the Station Commander for State Police in Olean. He is survived by her and their three children. Funeral arrangements are pending.
