BBC MEDIA ACTION RECRUITMENT Job title Journalist Presenter Location Juba, South Sudan Duration: Fixed Term, six months Start date: October 1st, 2014 BBC Media Action BBC Media Action, the BBC’s international development charity, believes in the power of media and communication to help reduce poverty and support people in claiming their rights. Our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world. We work in partnership to provide access to useful, timely, reliable information. We help people make sense of events, engage in dialogue, and take action to improve their lives. Background Our Tukul (Our Home), is a weekly radio magazine programme focusing on reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health (RMNCH) issues. Increasingly it also incorporates humanitarian topics to better reflect the current situation in South Sudan. The programme is broadcast on the Catholic Radio Network (CRN) as well as the UN Radio Miraya. Our Tukul is largely produced by a team of journalists in Juba, with contributions from the CRN partner radios. Job Summary: The Journalist/Presenter will anchor the programme in a dynamic fashion. He or she will conduct interviews in studio or in the field, moderate debates, introduce reports and other segments produced by Our Tukul team or partners. The Journalist Presenter will also do field reporting. Main responsibilities: Participate in the production meetings to suggest topics, angle and formats; Listen to all the segments produced by the team and prepare presentations and links; Conduct pre-recorded interviews, vox-pop, etc., and do occasional field reporting; Help the Editor develop the line-up of the programme; Develop scenarios and questions for studio recording; Anchor the programme in studio (presentations, co-animation, interviews, etc.) Ensure that the information provided is accurate. Work to improve the overall quality of the programme: content and format, in keeping with BBC Media Action standards and programme objectives. Required knowledge, skills and experience: o Degree in journalism, communications or equivalent; o At least two years’ experience working as an active radio journalist in a professional media, interviewing, reporting, script writing, editing and presenting; o At least two years’ experience anchoring a radio programme: magazine, news, culture or other. o Creativity, dynamism, superior interpersonal skills; o Sound knowledge of Adobe Audition software or Cool Edit o Strong IT skills, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint; o Excellent organizational skills and ability to plan and conduct work with minimal supervision; o Command of Simple Arabic, both verbal and written, and fluency in English. Knowledge of another national language would be an asset; o Willingness to work occasionally on week-ends. Desirable knowledge, skills and experience: o Academic study in the area of health or experience reporting on health issues. Women are strongly encouraged to apply.
