BBQ SEASON HAS ARRIVED! BUT DO YOU KNOW HOW TO CARE FOR YOU SKIN? It’s that time of year again and we’re beginning to venture outdoors. Spring and summer are seasons we associate with glowing radiant skin; delicious fresh meals and time spent outdoors enjoying the sun. Ironically, the season has become one of the most aggressive factors to our skin and bodies aging. It is a time of growth and rebirth, yet somehow it has also become a time of cellular destruction. Is it possible to still have the freedom summer promises, yet not jeopardize our health and increase the aging process even further? Of course! As with everything, freedom takes a little prep work, and a little TLC too. Barbeque season seems to be the main focus in all the supermarkets and deli departments at the moment. The scent of grills burning waft through neighbourhoods. It’s glorious! Even the healthiest of the healthy will still stop to smell as their mouths begin to water. COLLAGEN CIRCLE OF LIFE SERUM AND FREE RADICAL DAMAGE REPAIR It doesn’t seem fair to think that such an enjoyable and simple pleasure, as barbecued hamburger could be detrimental to the health of our skin, let alone speed up the aging process. Sadly, it is a fact that barbecued foods cause a reaction in the skin called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGE). This occurs during a chemical reaction between the proteins and fats in the meat and sugars when cooking at high temperatures. When the meat is heated at high temperatures, the sugars that were stored in the proteins and fats are released at an increased rate and become unstable. Once consumed, these sugars need to find a home and they attach themselves to the easiest molecules ␣ our connective tissue is the first on the scene, as sugar is drawn to collagen. Once these sugars find the collagen molecules, they attach themselves, congesting the collagen, therefore resulting in the breakdown of collagen tissue. If meat is heated at a slow moderate temperature, however, there is enough time in the cooking process for the enzymes to breakdown the sugar molecules. This reduces the risk of AGE, therefore keeping your skin and body at a lower risk level. Excess heat = Excess sugar = Excess breakdown = Increased aging. As our wonderful Raw Vegan Food Artist, Steven Dutchak would say, “If cheeseburgers are your jam, drown them in goodness”. And we agree. Not only can you barbeque your cheeseburgers more healthfully; the foods you choose to accompany it can be much healthier as well. Steve has proven time and time again that you never have to sacrifice taste in order to increase your consumption of healthy, living foods.
