BEFORE video games, PlayStations, Xbox and even television, the reliable radio was the main source of entertainment at home, across the globe. Even in modern times, people still flip radio stations for a quick recap of morning news, for ‘company’ and needed diversion while driving or when stuck in a traffic, or to spend a more laid-back and relaxing evening. In Qatar, Filipino expats have found a slice of home through the brand of entertainment provided by Pinoy Heart Radio (PHR), a global free online radio station. “Just like other Filipino workers abroad, I’ve been missing original Filipino music. And out of curiosity, I wanted to try being a disc jockey. And so my friends and I collaborated with the idea of establishing our own online radio. And we did it! I have been an online radio DJ for almost two years now,” said Romeo E Villegas Jr, better known as Dj Meow. The Doha-based expat is among the more than 90 DJs and moderators touching the lives of about 20,000 Filipino listeners across the globe. DJs, commentators and announcers based in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, Thailand, Philippines, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada and Turkey are just among those Pinoys working side by side to entertain their kababayans, as well as to update them on the happenings in Filipino communities elsewhere and their home country. PHR Qatar has more than 60 registered members and about 400 avid listeners. The group aims to tap more members of the community here. “We are not just playing music and trying to make our compatriots smile through some dose of comical stories and jokes but PHR is serving and touching the lives of Filipinos globally. PHR in Qatar is engaged in a number of activities supporting our kababayans. We are accredited by the Philippine Embassy Doha. We help promote businesses such as Filipino goods and services. We also help people not only in Qatar but also kababayans in the Philippines. We are doing outreach programmes in some communities and donating goods in times of calamities such as for the victims of Typhoon Maring, Yolanda, and Glenda in the Philippines,” said DJ Meow. PHR has been also collaborating in main charity institutions in the Philippines to ensure that they make the most of their ability to serve their kababayans in need. “PHR needs the support of the community very much. We would like to extend our gratitude to those who are eager to know more about us. Please feel free to visit us at our website pinoyheartradio or you can email us at pinoyheartradio@gmail,” said the 37-year-old DJ.
