BELIZE LEGAL/JUDICIAL SYSTEM: *The legal system of Belize is based on English common law, as it was a colony at one time, and only fully seceded within the last quarter century. The Constitution calls for the creation of the Supreme Court in Chapter (7) Section 94, as well as the Appeals Court, plus there is a Privy Council. o Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) Replaces, the UK Privy - Council as of June 1st 2010. o The Supreme Court o The Court of Appeals under the Constitution of Belize, the Chief Justice is appointed by the Governor-General, acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister, given after consultation with the Leader of the Opposition. In addition to the filing and processing of court documents, the Supreme Court Registry is also responsible for all matters relating to estates, companies, and trademarks. All “ land matters,” are handled by the Land’s Registry based in Belmopan, while the Vital Statistics Unit in Belize City handles all matters regarding births, deaths, and marriages. Now, Belize boast’s some of the most brilliant minds in the “legal – field.” The PROBLEM I observed is; the “influence” these Attorneys have over our “legal – process” when it comes to our “justices” administering these cases, that is being brought before their benches: Often times we would see our Policemen/Women, go beyond the call of their duties, & diligently endeavor to collect all the pertinent & circumstantial evidence, which is admissible in our “court of law,” only to have cases thrown out of the courts, because the evidence - pool collected, cannot substantiate the cases; we has seen Murder Cases, get watered – down to Manslaughter, Rapes reduced to Indecent – assault, Aggravated – burglary reduced to Harm, Drug Trafficking & Possession of Control – drug Cases dismissed, because “evidence” in Exhibit – holdings, turns out to be powder or candle: And not to mention, Witnesses being bribed or intimidated not to testify/withdrawal of testimony. We need to seriously look @ Better “training” for our Law – enforcement Agencies, & Re-vamped our Judicial – process.*
