BILL TO MANDATE SCHOOL COUNSELORS IN PENNSYLVANIA INTRODUCED!!! PA Representative Brendan Boyle, District 170, yesterday (11/14) introduced HB 1844, a bill to mandate school counselors in Pennsylvania with a ratio. In Representative Boyle’s memo to his colleagues in the House, he noted that the bill is designed to “ensure that all public schools in the Commonwealth meet a predetermined ratio of students for every school counselor.” He further noted that “Following a two year probationary period, this legislation would require all public schools in the Commonwealth from kindergarten to eighth grade to provide one certified school counselor for every 375 students, and all public high schools to provide one certified school counselor for every 325 students. Additionally, the role and general duties of school counselors within the Public School Code would be outlined to accurately reflect the broad based nature of their work” A full copy of his memo can be found on the home page of the PSCA website psca-web.org.
