BIOLOGICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL EVOLUTION People have to make a distinction between biological evolution ( which is slow ) and technological evolution ( which is, comparatively, very fast ). One influences the other and vice-versa. But they have quite different speeds, mechanisms of change and replication processes. However, replacing mutations and natural selection ( as mechanism of change) by design and genetic engineering, biological evolution can accelerate and, perhaps, even match the speed of the technological evolution. At this point, they will combine and become a bio-technological evolution. Great improvements in our mental ( mainly creativity ) and physical capabilities through genetic and epigenetic engineering, nanotechnology, etc. will cause further acceleration of technological evolution which, in turn, will accelerate biological evolution even further. The close entanglement between these two forms of evolution will cause them to combine and become just one ( but the darwinian mechanism will be replaced by smart design ).
