BIRTHDAY WISHES: Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste was born today in 1948 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Zigaboo is an American drummer best known as a founding member of the funk group, The Meters. He started out as the drummer for Fats Domino’s backup band, which eventually became The Meters. With The Meters, he has written over 400 songs individually and collectively. This collection of songs has been released on over 36 albums internationally. Zigaboos recordings with The Meters have been sampled many times over by artists such as Musiq, Queen Latifah, Run DMC, NWA, Ice Cube, Salt-N-Pepa, Cypress Hill, EPMD, Public Enemy, Digable Planets, DJ Shadow, A Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, Naughty by Nature, and Tweet. Many consider Zigaboo to be one of the most innovative, and highly acclaimed drummers ever to hail from New Orleans. A pioneer of second-line funk, Zigaboo remains a strong influence for drummers with his syncopated drumming style. His work with The Meters inspired scores of drummers to try to “turn the beat around.” By combining the steady pulse of R&B with the reckless street beats of second-line brass bands, Zigaboo devised a loose, linear drum style that used every rhythmic permutation he could possibly fit into a bar of 4/4 without repeating himself. The Meters were the driving force behind New Orleans funk. Unlike their contemporaries who were more flamboyant in their rhythms, The Meters relied on complicated and organic rhythms that gave their music an earthy sound. The band was best known for tracks like “Hey Pocky A-Way” and “Cissy Strut.” They developed a devoted following not only among fans of their music but also inside the music industry. Artists like Paul McCartney, Robert Palmer, Dr. John, and Patti LaBelle recruited them as a backing band in the studio. Zigaboo now resides in Oakland, California where he continues to teach, release records, as well as manage his publishing company, Jomod Music, and record label, JZM records.
