BJP Pls focus on winning Delhi State before Attempting to Triumph in Nation State! Confusion in Delhi BJP, BJP leadership is convinced that the coming Delhi Assembly poll is theirs to lose. But nonetheless Vijay Goel is not the right candidate to be projected as a Chief Minister. Ideally, a section of the party believes that Sushma Swaraj is a sure-fire winner should she agree to lead the campaign. That way she can also avenge the defeat of 15 years when at the last minute she was inducted as the Chief Minister and had led the BJP campaign. Even though a majority of the leaders are convinced that Swaraj would throw an angry fit at the suggestion that she should lead the Delhi Assembly campaign, seeing it as a demotion when she fashions herself as a Prime Ministerial candidate, a section of the party argues that she can switch back to the central politics after becoming the Delhi Chief Minister for a few short months. After all, the Delhi elections are due in November while the central poll is not due till May next year. Besides, with Modi certain to lead the BJP Parliamentary campaign, Swaraj might find her role drastically diminished at the central level, especially when she is opposed to Modi becoming the Prime Ministerial candidate. However, given the total confusion in the party, it is unlikely that Swaraj would agree to lead the Delhi Assembly campaign. In case she says no, which she is certain to, another leader whose name is being mentioned is that of Smriti Irani. Currently, a Rajya Sabha member, Smriti has her roots in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar. Born a Malhotra, she switched to Mumbai after her marriage and entry into television. A forceful and intellectually sharp speaker, Smriti can make rings around Shiela Dikshit. Besides, she belongs to no particular group in the BJP and enjoys the support of Narendra Modi. The only problem is that the entrenched groups in the Delhi BJP led by the old and aging Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Vijay Goel and Vijender Gupta might not like to see an ‘outsider’ usurp what they think is their right to head the campaign. Uncertainty in Delhi BJP might prove costly for the party.
