BLACK PAST VIDEO OF THE DAY: Weve told you about Ruby Bridges before, and with very good reason! Today marks the 54th anniversary of her first day of school at the formerly all-white William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans — making her the first African American child to attend an all-white elementary school in the South. Born in Tylertown, Miss., and relocated to New Orleans a short time later, her parents — both of whom were former sharecroppers — responded to a request from the NAACP and volunteered her to participate in the integration of the New Orleans School system. The court-ordered first day of integrated schools in New Orleans, November 14, 1960, was commemorated by Norman Rockwell in the painting The Problem We All Live With, which is featured in the video shown here. Read more about Ruby Bridges on her entry on BlackPast.org (link: bit.ly/Ruby-Bridges), and please Share and Like this post if you do.
