BREAKING BARRIERS: Plotting the Path to Academic Success for School-Aged African American Students The Minority Success Department is pleased to bring a significant professional development opportunity to District and school leadership teams over the next few months. This seven-session series, Breaking Barriers: Plotting the Path to Academic Success for School-Aged African American Students will kick-off with an event, titled, A Mile in My Shoes, moderated by Dr. Ivory Toldson, author and researcher on the sociological and psychological issues that have implications for educating African American students. This event will highlight the student’s perspective on their personal experiences and influences around issues that impact learning, and provide a fresh perspective and in-depth analysis of the unique, social, emotional and cognitive factors that contribute to African American male students well-being and school success. The “A Mile in My Shoes” kickoff event will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at Dillard High School, in the main auditorium, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. It is open to all District personnel, students, parents, and partners engaged in the work of reducing the achievement gap amongst our subgroups, and promoting academic success of African American students.
