BREAKING NEWS: Syrian fighter jet shot down over Israel IDF confirms Syrian fighter jet shot down over Golan Heights; Syria accuses Israel of support for Islamic State and al-Nusra Front ******************************************************************** Israel shot down a Syrian fighter jet Tuesday morning after the aircraft flew into Israel over the Golan Heights. The IDF confirmed it shot down the jet with a patriot missile, the jet most likely having entered Israel by accident. The IDF released the statement Tuesday morning, “Moments ago a Syrian aircraft infiltrated Israeli airspace. The IDF intercepted the aircraft in mid-flight, using the Patriot air defense system. The circumstances of the incident are being reviewed.” The IDF later stated that the jet was a Russian-made Sukhoi 24-fighter jet and that the “jet was successfully intercepted by our aerial defense system along the Syrian border.” A senior IDF official stated that the discovery, identification and interception was quickly and professionally executed and the IAF stood its guard. The interception was done with a surface to air Patriot missile. The last instance of Israel downing a Syrian aircraft was in 1985. Israel’s Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon stated that Israel has “clarified this in the past and we’re emphasizing it again now: We won’t allow anybody, whether it’s a state or a terrorist organization, to threaten our security and violate our sovereignty,” the defense minister and former IDF chief of staff said. “We will respond forcefully to all attempts of this kind, whether it’s an accident or intentional.” Syria confirmed that the plane jet was hit and was downed near the Quneitra border accusing Israel of “support of the Islamic State group and the al- Nusra Front. Syria’s civil was has been on Israel’s border for months, several cases of mortar fire spilling into Israel.
