BREVITY OF LIFE Life is short and no one knows exactly how many years he has to live. Many of us have seen, heard about or even experienced the sudden loss of a colleague, family member, neighbour or friend - some of whom are fervent christians. This implies that the definition of long life is relative - depending largely on how God sees it, not how we choose to define it (2 Pet. 3:8). Realizing this truth, Moses the man of God prayed this heartfelt prayer recorded in Psalms 90:12, So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. King David too solemnly beseeched, Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am...verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Surely every man walked in a vain show: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them (Psalms 39:4-6). Also, while on earth, Christ repeatedly spoke of heaven, the brevity of life and the need to prepare for eternity. The parable of the rich fool is one of such instances. While celebrating his bountiful harvest, the man in the parable never knew that his soul would be required of him that night (Lk. 12:16-21). This calls for caution and watchfulness on the part of every christian. Realizing the brevity of life should jolt us from careless living. It should make us redeem the time and make the best of every opportunity we are given to live for God, get closer to Him and do the work of the ministry in season and out of season. We need to consciously tell ourselves each day that it may be our last and as a result make lifetime changes where necessary. It is indeed worrisome that many today are more concerned about the grandness of their burial or the burial of their loved ones than the preparedness of their souls to meet God. Some even go to the extent of spending their saving even borrowing. This is all wrong. Rather than being overly concerned about what happens to our bodies after death (i.e. its burial), we should rather be concerned with where our soul and spirit will spend eternity.
