Back from San Francisco for First Command Financial Services - TopicsExpress

Back from San Francisco for First Command Financial Services annual meeting (Stephen has been with them for over 10 years and were huge fans). Its sort of like a family reunion for work. I havent been in years and last time was a drive through, this time was 5 days. Here are some highlights: - Eavesdropping on conversations that frequently included the words, platform and back end. I felt like I was among my people! - Walking. Lots of walking. We visited Alcatrax and walked back by way of Fishermans Wharf (where we stopped for sourdough & seafood), Little Italy (where we enjoyed the smells), Ghirardelli (where we stopped for chocolate sundaes), and Chinatown (where there were some awful smells but where we stopped for massages). - Visiting Sarah Buhr at her job at TechCrunch and on the way walking by Eventbrite and other corp. headquarters of companies that I admire. - Being enthralled by the wit and power of Dr. Bernice Berry (we always have incredible speakers). - Shopping. Since everything is so close and I had some free time without Alexis, I spent hours trying on clothes. I finally bought a size 6 jeans and a size 12 dress. Same person, wildly different sizing. Ill take the 6! Chinatown had a few fun finds too. I have painful blisters Im treating with essential oils. - The Marriott we stayed at had the worst bed Ive ever slept on in a hotel. It felt like camping. Every day was packed. Im exhausted. If you know me you know I dont do well in the early morning. I dont like to eat or talk until at least 9am, but I had to do both. Good thing I loved our trip so much that I did pretty well except one morning. - I didnt know the activist part of Alcatraz, about how American Indians occupied it for 18 months and got some of their tribal lands restored. Thats the part of the story I loved. - Ill miss the food, the sourdough in particular, and the conservation (bring your own bag or you pay for it and recycling is everywhere). I liked the fast food Thai place with fresh spring rolls made to order. If I were to open a restaurant that would be my concept. - The drought is so bad that people are paying to have their lawns spray painted green. Its the main story in most newscasts. A warning to Utah. - You must always travel to SF with a scarf or jacket even during the summer, because 85 degrees is record breaking heat. Thanks to humidity, paper is not crisp there, it is limp. - A limo ride to dinner with our district (thanks Michael David Bunting) who are a lot of fun! When you serve those who serve (many financial planners in the company are former high ranking military), you can expect things to be well planned and on time. - Getting bumped on the way back and earning some miles for our next trip! https://plus.google/+JanetThaeler/posts/C2K2VJVV4yT
