Back in The sixties, television personality Art Linkletter, hosted a program called Art Linkletter’s House Party, in which he featured a segment called, “kids say the darndest things”. As owners of The Oaks and Breakfast we have experienced a number of clever and comical comments made by our guests that give us reason to laugh. . . --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It’s All Relative – During one breakfast service, a menu featuring a Greek Omelet, fresh fruit, biscuits and a complement of Peasant Potatoes was presented, and we made the standard offer of ketchup or pepper-sauce. A stately southern gentleman seated at the table commented, “Only a Yankee would use ketchup” on a breakfast such as this. To which his wife responded, “Your son-in-law uses ketchup on his eggs and he’s from Charlotte!” He took a long sip on his coffee and said, “I rest my case.” __________________________________________________________________ Back in the Day – Another morning a woman comes down the stairs clutching one of the old fashion wind-up alarm clocks that we have in our guest rooms. She pushes the timepiece into my hands and assuredly insists, “This clock has stopped – it needs a new battery!” I took the clock and gave it a quick wind and marveled that I was standing before a person that may never have used a telephone with a cord; washed dishes in a sink of hot soapy water; or had an alarm clock that needed to be wound. __________________________________________________________________ So Damn Sweet – Today, a return guest who adores our Turret Room tell us that she loves sleeping in the turret, because with the draperies open, “I can lie on my side and fall asleep watching the fireflies dance.” __________________________________________________________________ Until we are contacted by a television representative to formulate our own network series (and next season’s big hit), Donna and I continue to enjoy the gift of another day in these beautiful mountains and the opportunity to share it with our wonderful guests. For your next trip to the mountains, stay at The Oaks Bed and Breakfast, a classic Queen Ann Victorian located in the historic village of Saluda, call 828-749-2000 or visit theoaksbedandbreakfast
