Back in the 70s as a bachelor I was posted in Delhi and was put up in the Central Vesta Mess on Janpath. A great location - easily accessible to CP and other places of interest. Food in the Mess was nothing spectacular. We had literally patronized Pindi at Pandara Road. The owner gave us generous discounts - he gives them even now when I visit with my family. However the challenge was the money in hand. Invariably, after the 20th of the month, the pockets dried up and one had to bank on do ande ka bhujiya in extra messing. Life was fun and without any hassles. One of the most interesting memories of these escapades is the payment formula. Most of the times the Dutch system worked and there was a tacit understanding of clearing the expenses. However, at times, the payment became an issue. At the right time when the payment was to be made, some one would excuse to go to the wash room, another person would be seated at the far end of the table and would make a feeble attempt to pay while some would step out for a smoke. Everyone would look around and some scape goat would end up paying. It was fun to watch when the waiter came up with the bill. I am sure you have had similar experiences to share !!!!!!!!!!
