Bacteria protect our bodies, rejuvenate our soil, and soon they may fuel our cars. An international team of bioengineers has generated a strain of E. coli that produces usable quantities of isopentenol, a desirable fuel component. Although many laboratories have generated isopentenol-producing bacteria, none were able to design bacteria that were also tolerant to the solvent. This research project, published in mBio, addressed the issue of tolerance by overexpressing a biosynthesis regulator and a transporter which are normally up-regulated in response to isopentenol. The result is a strain that can produce up to 60 percent more isopentenol than wildtype E. coli strain and may be economically viable on an industrial scale. Read more: bit.ly/13IITJe
