Bad Words: A solid first directorial effort from Jason Bateman, but this film simply cant overcome its admittedly ludicrous plot. It is mired in the logic, or Iack there of, of a nonsensical plot about a grown man competing in a childrens spelling bee. While there are some solid laughs here, the story never amounts to anything, even with an emotional third act revelation about why our main character is behaving like such a piece of crap. This film just felt super gimmicky to me, and when all was said and done, the gimmick couldnt continue to hold the weight of a remedial story. And it never seemed like the film makers had any designs to transcend the gimmick. Like I said, a solid effort, but ultimately a swing and a miss.
