Bakken crude oil trains are ticking time bombs loaded with highly combustible crude oil going 60 MPH through small towns in Montana. This current derailment near Pompeys Pillar east of Billings happened on Thursday, July 10, 2014 around 9 PM apparently was a train hauling coal east to Detroit. Another coal train derailed on February 24, 2014 one mile east of Terry, Montana dumping coal and destroying 29 cars as well as tearing up the tracks. The BNSF was quick to respond and restored the tracks to keep freight moving but these tracks are over 100 years old and were originally laid to haul passengers and light freight. Each coal car weighs about 100 thousand pounds with each crude oil tanker weighing 250 thousand pounds and with that the tracks are taking a beating. Rail traffic has increased five fold over the last three years and tracks are going to show their wear ant tear with more derailment occurring. Can we afford to wait for a Lac Megantic, Quebec, Canada tragedy to occur before we wake up and take action to prevent injuries, deaths and major property damage. The Canadian Bakken crude derailment cost 47 lives and destroyed half of the town of Lac Megantic.
