Balancing interests between the Jewish and Muslim worlds: a case study in Azerbaijani foreign policy. CRRC-Azerbaijan is pleased to invite you to a talk of Work-in-Progress Series Balancing interests between the Jewish and Muslim worlds: a case study in Azerbaijani foreign policy by Jason D’Amour. Date: Friday, October 25, 2013 Time: 18.30-20.00 Location: CRRC-Azerbaijan, Khazar University, 122 Bashir Safaroglu Street, Room #13 (1st floor), Baku. Overview: Azerbaijan’s foreign policy is commonly referred to as a ‘balanced’ foreign policy, a consequence of Azerbaijan’s geopolitical realities, and the Aliyev Presidencies. Mr. D’Amour has been researching how this policy of ‘balancing’ functions when managing relations between two opposing parties: specifically the ability to balance good relations with both Israel and the Arab Middle East. This project will begin by providing an overview of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy in a general context. Mr. D’Amour will then explore the dynamics of the relationships with Israel and the Arab Middle East, emphasising compatibilities and issues within the context of Azerbaijani national interests. This project will also explore the dominance of security concerns and energy politics within the regional context, being informed by Critical Geopolitics and the Copenhagen School, in order to further understand the regional security complex and the primacy of hydrocarbon resources. Lastly, this project will also attempt to position these relationships within the international geopolitical context. The views expressed in this presentation are solely those of the author. They do not necessarily reflect the views of CRRC, its staff or partner organizations. Presenter Bio: Jason D’Amour is a second year Master of Arts student at the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies of Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Mr. D’Amour has been conducting field research in Baku during September and October for his Master’s research project, with the working title: “Balancing interests between the Jewish and Muslim worlds: a case study in Azerbaijani foreign policy.”During the course of his studies, Mr. D’Amour has thematically focused primarily on security studies, ethnic conflicts, and energy politics, concentrating particularly on the South Caucasus and Central Asian regions. Mr. D’Amour received his BA in Political Science with a minor in Russian from McGill University in 2011. Mr. D’Amour also works for the Montreal Institute of Genocide Studies. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. RSVP to Nargiz Guliyeva
