Bandits Ambush Policemen In Edo, Kill Two GUNMEN, suspected to be robbers, on Wednesday tricked policemen from the Edo State Police Command to an area around Ogba Junction, along the Benin-Auchi road, killing two of them and inflicting injuries on unspecified number of others, including civilians. A source, who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said the suspected gang members placed a distress call to operatives of the state Special Anti-Robbery Squad, who, on getting to a spot around the Iyayi Rubber Plantation, found themselves sandwiched between the armed men on both sides, who rained bullets on them. The source said the corpses of two of the victims – an Inspector, who he claimed hailed from Agbor, in Delta State, and a Corporal, whose name he gave as Kennedy – had been brought to the state command headquarters, in the Government Reservation Area, Benin. The source further stated that some of the injured, including the civilians, were taken to an undisclosed hospital, for treatment. The source said, “Two policemen died; one an Inspector and a Corporal. Then, three other policemen sustained injuries. They are in the hospital now, with some members of the armed gang and some civilians too. “All the DPOs (Edo) are with the commissioner (Foluso Adebanjo) now. They came to hold a meeting on the issue.” When contacted, Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Eguavoen, urged our correspondent to come over the command headquarters for proper briefing. He said his men were just returning from the location of the incident. He added, “In this kind of situation, it is better you come so that we can know how best to go about this, because we are just coming from the scene. The PPRO, however, called back to reschedule the meeting, saying, “We want to go and see.” -Punch
