Bangladesh delivers aid to Yolanda victims Fri, 29 Nov 2013 04:59:53 +0000 by Jenny F. Manongdo November 29, 2013 A Bangladesh Navy Ship BNS Somudra Joy arrived Friday at Pier 15 in South Harbor Manila to deliver relief goods worth $1.25 million to the survivors of typhoon Yolanda. The People’s Republic of Bangladesh is also donating $1 million to the Philippine government. The Bangladesh Navy ship is captained by Commodore M. Nazmul Karim Kislu, who is accompanied by 19 officers, 114 sailors and four US Navy personnel. BNS Somudra Joy came from San Francisco and sailed through Hawaii and Guam before it arrived in the Philippines. It will leave the country on Dec. 1, sailing back to Chittagong port in Bangladesh. “We remember with gratitude the kind gesture shown to Bangladesh by the government of the Philippines during the unprecedented flood of 1998 in Bangladesh by sending relief goods and assistance. Bangladesh and the Philippines have a long history of friendship and very good bilateral relationship. The Philippines was among the first countries which recognized Bangladesh in 1972 after Bangladesh got its independence from Pakistan. There have been many bilateral and trade agreements signed between the two countries,” Bangladesh Ambassador to the Philippines John Gomes said. Aside from the assistance provided by the Bangladesh government, the Square Group of Companies, the largest pharmaceutical company in Bangladesh, also donated medicine and medical supplies worth $40,000. A dinner reception was set today for the navy ship crew and Philippine officials including officers of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Office of the Civil Defense, Department of National Defense, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Philippines Port Authority and Philippines Coast Guard, and Asian Terminals Inc. Bangladesh nationals who are working in multi-national companies and are residing in the Philippines were also invited to the reception. Click here to Original Content
