Bapu, A marvelous satirical analysis with an educational nuance! It exposes the basic tenet of all politics that In it neither there are permanent friends, nor there are permanent enemies, only there are permanent interests! Only this reality is camouflaged by a sweetened ethical veneer! It is for the humorists of Birbal like clan and the cartoonists to expose the comic farce! Manohar Sapre Sent from IPAD On this day of Naraka Chaturdashi, I am amused by the similarity of Indian politics and the mythological story of Narakasura, the demon-king of Pragjyotish [Assam). According to it, the king had become all powerful and was threatening to take-over the heavenly kingdom of Lord Indra. He had also imprisoned some 16000 young girls. Lord Shrikrishna (with his valiant wife – Satyabhama) fought a fierce battle and finally beheaded the King on this day of Naraka Chaturdashi . He also freed the women kept in captivity by Narakasura.. He was astonished though, to find that the women, instead of rejoicing, looked very sad and morose. When asked the reason, they replied that nobody would believe them to be virtuous virgins and therefore, nobody would not come forward to marry any of the girls. They were condemned to remain unmarried forever. The story goes that Lord Krishna married all of them. This must be only a symbolic act, for I do not think that his warring wives – Rukhmini and Satyabhama – would let him bring in any of his new wives to live under the same roof! Today, there are some 43 MLAs in the Maharashtra Congress camp, who would want to be rescued. In the modern democratic India, wars are fought not on the battlefield but in the elections and BJP has emerged with the biggest tally – just a few seats away from simple majority. The satisfy their lust for power, BJP would be more than willing to lure as many of those MLAs if at least 15 of them agree to break away. A handsome ‘package’, which would be too good to refuse, awaits them. NCP camp is in a similar predicament with some 42 MLAs. Instead of allowing BJP to lure away 1/3rd of them, their boss - Sharad Pawar- has offered all of them to BJP for a ‘Live-in relationship’. Admittedly, they will have to be content with just a monthly maintenance with no rights over property or inheritance. However, there is one compensating factor. Breaking a ‘Live-in Relationship’ is a lot easier than getting a divorce through the tedious judicial procedure. BJP finds itself in a dilemma – marry 15 Congress brides or Live-in with 42 NCP girls? When I shared these thoughts with my senior friend , Manohar Sapre , he said “, Not just mythology but even history tends to repeat itself”. He referred to the system of zananakhana, where the Muslim rulers in the medieval India would lodge a large number of their concubines . The mode of succession to throne in those days was peculiar. One of the Sultan’s brothers or sons would first eliminate all other contenders and finally kill (or imprison) the Sultan to ascend the throne. In the process, the inmates of the zanaankhana would also be passed on to the new Sultan. BJP has won (well, almost won) the right to occupy the gaddi in Maharashtra and now is eying the inmates of all the zananakhanas of all other parties. Only condition is that the minimum marketable lot is 1/3rd. Mind you, my friends, all this is being done in the interest of economic development of the state, not for any personal gains.
