Barrett and I hiked out briskly this afternoon to collect a specimen of mystery lichen. At least I thought it was lichen. Upon finding the spot, I pulled some out and checked for elasticity, the telltale sign of usnea lichen. It had none, and the texture was rough like steel wool. Was it hair from a (steel) wooly mammoth? Upon bringing it home and taking a few macro photos, I think it is fishing line with something growing on it, or perhaps it is just dirty. Is what excelsior looks like up close? If not, I guess theres still a mystery regarding the growth. The dime is to give an idea of scale. As you can see by the third photo, my fellow scientist was completely exhausted after collecting the specimen. Hes not going to be much help.
