Barugo Appeal Two weeks ago a typhoon hit the coast of the Philippines killing thousands and causing untold devastation. The family of one of our students is in a desperate situation, without a home or food. 99 percent of houses in the small town of Barugo, in the province of Leyte where the family live, were damaged, most beyond repair. The student’s family home was wrecked, with only a portion of one room remaining and they are starving because disaster relief has not yet reached Barugo. Even in normal times the only access to Barugo is by ferry or air. Currently the only way in is via helicopter. So far one has circled the town, raised hopes, and then left again. Our student was prepared to give up her tuition fees in order to assist her family. We can do better. We are asking the Aston community to pull together and help. Help not just our student but the whole town: she doesn’t want her family to be singled out when so many other people are in desperate need of assistance and has only agreed to accept our help if all in Barugo can benefit. We are asking everyone at Aston to donate whatever they can; no amount is too small. We will be setting up collecting stations in various parts of the University and people will also circulate with collection buckets. Please look out for collectors this week. If you miss the collectors please go to the Main Building reception desk or the Hub reception desk to make your donation or donate now by clicking this link. The default amount is £1; please overtype the £1 with whatever you can afford to give https://payments.aston.ac.uk/webpayv3/xpay.aspx?PmtTyp=ABS030&Am=1&Cmt=Thank+you+for+your+support. We can make a huge difference: let’s make this count. If we all gave £1, we could raise thousands of £s. We will report back on how much we raised, and the difference it made, over the next couple of weeks.
