Base Training As it was another great day, I decided to go for a ride and enjoy the weather, scenery and ride over the Carrasqueta – 11k climb, 6k descent and return. Within 5 minutes I was passed (only just!) by three Caja Rural riders returning from a long ride in the mountains – as many Pro-teams, the riders were building their base for the coming season Base training – this is the training that teaches your body to utilise oxygen as efficiently as possible as well as preparing it for the harder training that should follow once the ‘base’ is in place. Base training sessions are typically long and steady and at a relatively low intensity to allow your body to adapt and become more aerobically efficient. Now – winter – is therefore the ideal time for base training to ensure you have the necessary adaptations in place to take advantage of them in future training sessions. The base, or foundation, needs to be as big as possible so that the harder training sessions that should come later in the year can be of greater benefit – so your body will be able to cope without becoming too fatigued. The bigger the base, the harder the training can be later on, and the bigger the benefits. For many people low intensity / base training can be all they ever do in the first few years of their training to ensure a long-lived career without injury, it might not be fast but it will make you faster!
